What it is like living in Dallas TX

Relocating to a new city can be just as exciting as it is stressful. More so if you decide to make that move to big, bold, and beautiful Dallas, TX.

A dynamic and cosmopolitan city, Dallas mirrors the literal and figurative immensity of its home state – thus its nickname, the Big D. There is so much going on in Dallas and people are flocking to where the action is.

Here’s what to expect in your new life in larger-than-life Dallas:

Prepare for the sheer size of the city

As mentioned several times already, everything is bigger in Texas. Dallas is no exception. Relative to other metropolitan areas in the country, Dallas is the 9th largest city in the whole country with over one million permanent residents.

Population-wise, it comes 4th after Chicago, Los Angeles, and NYC.

Geographically speaking, The Big D spreads across approximately 383 square miles of Texan land, with only less than 12% of it constituting bodies of water.

The city is serviced by 25 passenger airlines and its central location allows residents to fly to most parts of Continental US within four hours.

Different neighborhoods, different vibe

Considering the size and population density of Dallas, you are sure to find a neighborhood that could cater to your lifestyle preference. Choose from close to 50 neighborhoods within the city and surrounding suburbs as each has its own vibe. Central Dallas takes you close to commercial districts, the swinging nightlife, and upscale urban living. Then there are neighborhoods like Pleasant Grove and Preston Hollow that allow easy access to the central district but are remote enough for residents to enjoy more space and tranquility. Meanwhile, families who prefer suburban living will enjoy the wide-open spaces offered by communities like Plano and Coppell.

No personal income taxes

One of the things that makes Dallas one of the best options for young professionals and families is that residents do not pay for personal income taxes. This gives them more spending money for the more important things in their lives.

Exciting job market

There are 25 Fortune 500 companies in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex alone. Initially, most of the city’s employment opportunities came from the oil industry. It has since expanded to banking, commerce, telecommunications, IT services, and transportation.

Some of the most promising companies to land a job in Dallas are Bank of America, Baylor Scott & White Health, and American Airlines Group (formerly AMR Corporation).

Forbes.com also reported that as of October 2019, the median household income in Dallas was set at more than $70,000 with a registered growth of 4.3%. This essentially offsets the cost of living here which is slightly higher than the national average at 2%.

Booming housing market

Over the last year, home values in Dallas have increased by more than 12% and there’s no sign that this trend is about to end. They are still lower though, compared to other major metropolitan areas like New York and Los Angeles.
